  • Bono and Steve Jobs Collaborate on (RED) iPod and Tech Products

    Bono & RED iPod Potential

by Rebecca Carter September 15, 2006
    Categories: Causes.

Rumors are spreading in the eco-gossip world that Bono and Steve Jobs are working together to launch a special edition RED iPod, MacBook, and/or iMac in the near future.

Never heard of (RED) before? It’s Bono’s baby, and it’s so cool. Here’s a little more about it:

(PRODUCT)RED’s primary objective is to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds for the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.

Companies whose products take on the (RED) mark contribute a percentage of the sales from that product to the Global Fund to finance AIDS programmes in Africa, with an emphasis on the health of women and children.

Current (RED) products include a super-sleek RED Motorola Slvr (UK only, boo!) and a RED Amex card (ad features supermodel Gisele Bundchen), among others. The (RED) campaign is still much more visible in the UK than in the US, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the concept really take off here.

A portion of each product sale goes to the Global Fund, an organization that helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

  • (RED) Campaign Highlights AIDS Awareness Through The Independent

Black & White and RED All Over

    2

by Rebecca Carter September 21, 2006
    Categories: Causes.

Remember the joke? What’s black and white and red all over? The real answer was the newspaper…but then we kids would make up random, and now seemingly gross answers like “an inside-out zebra”.

Well, that saying comes to mind today, when (RED) took over The Independent. (RED) is Bono’s AIDS campaign that I had never heard about until a week ago, and since then, I have seen big news about it almost daily.

First of all, your best bet would be to stop reading this post and go check out The Independent. It will only be up for the day, I imagine.

Still here? Okay, I’ll give you some highlights. Giorgio Armani is the guest editor. Half of the day’s revenues will be donated to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS. Featuring interviews and content from George Clooney, Ashley Judd, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, and more…it is an incredible feature. There’s even a free Kate Moss poster in there. Order your copy and all revenue from online sales will be donated to help fight Aids in Africa.

    Quotes from the special edition:

Giorgio Armani on (RED): “Surely if there is one thing we should all be able to agree upon, whatever our faith or race, it seems to me we have an obligation to protect the age of innocence for the world’s children, today, and for all our tomorrows.”

George Clooney on Darfur: “I’m not a journalist, but I can give others the opportunity to do their job as journalists. Often, that’s what they want to do, more than anything. But editors have a tough time selling space for stories like that – unless a celebrity becomes involved. This seemed like a good place to spend the celebrity credit I’d been racking up all spring campaigning for my Oscar. It was a good way to cleanse that.”

Ashley Judd on AIDS: “On a café patio I met with Annie: a tiny, lovely looking woman, terribly frail and missing some teeth but quick to smile and giggle. She explained that she has a message for her people and it is to be wise. Aids is here, and it is not something made up as a reason to spend money – which is one of the rumours here. It will infect and kill you if you don’t protect yourself.”

Finally, an excerpt of the George Clooney interview, which sums up what ecorazzi.com is all about:

Essentially, what Clooney has done is to use his celebrity, not to mention his considerable personal charm, wit and intelligence, as a weapon to further all sorts of causes bigger than himself.

Eva Longoria just went from a 3 bedroom to a 6 bedroom/nine bath.

Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan is selling a condo that she’s never lived in. She stays in hotels instead. She has plans to buy a house.

Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale just bought J. Lo’s old house – a gigantic place.

Stars are upgrading their homes. Bigger spaces. Much bigger. This is no good news for the environment, as bigger homes suck much more energy.

Al Gore was recently slammed by USA Today for having multiple, and very large, homes.

We encourage celebrities to power these monster homes with green energy, install green roofs, and consider energy efficiency in every possible way.

The Ticker tells us that Reese Witherspoon, Misha Barton and Halle Berry are hooked on organic beauty products because of their “healthy effects and improvements over their synthetic counterparts.”

The article goes on to explain what organic beauty products are made of, the downside ($$), and a warning to check labels. “Aware of the new boom in the organic market, many companies are placing one or two organic oils in a synthetic product in order to charge more money and call their products ‘organic.’”

Red Hot Chili PeppersIn San Francisco, you can stay with the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Hotel Triton*.

Nature lovers all the way, the RHCP suite was designed with little waste. In addition to the paints being earth friendly, much of the furniture is “rescued,” the textiles are made of hemp, and the sheets are organic cotton.

This hotel, which boasts eco-features on their website, also has eco-celebrity suites. Choose among Kathy Griffin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Carlos Santana, and Jerry Garcia.

Though we couldn’t find their eco-link on the website as described, the parent company Kimpton Group emailed us the following link which includes a description of programs currently in place.

Kelly HuActress and former Miss Hawaii, Kelly Hu will run the Honolulu Marathon on December 10. She is doing so as part of a fundraiser for Reef Check Hawaii, an organization designed to save coral reefs.

Her thoughts on the run and the organization? “I wanted to do something, particularly for Hawaii, and I’ve always been sort of worried about the environment in general,” she said. “Coming from Hawaii, you grow up with an appreciation of the ocean.” Her goal is to “finish some time before the benefit the following day.”

Orlando Bloom and Kate Bosworth Support Global Cool

Orlando Bloom & Kate BosworthThe Fuji Rock Festival, held at the end of July in Japan, is known for being a carbon neutral event. That’s probably why Global Cool decided to use the 3-day concert as the launchpad for their campaign – a 10-year program to cut the world’s CO2 emissions by 10 billion tons.

And of course, a little start power goes a long way, so Orlando Bloom and Kate Bosworth were there to help kick-off the program in style. The full details of Global Cool will be announced later this year.
